For the last week Sydney has been swamped with English cricket fans, here to see the fifth and final Ashes Test. After being thoroughly thrashed in the previous four Tests their remaining hope has been to avoid a total whitewash and maybe recover some pride with a half-decent performance in Sydney. Sadly in vain.

Earlier I was excited by the English invasion and intended chronicling their travails in a series of posts entitled Barmy Army Watch. However given the pathetic showing of their beloved cricket team, to now indulge in rank gloating would be simply cruel. The fans have come a long way and well know the humiliating score without it being rubbed in their faces.

To be honest though, this is less a result of my compassion for the English supporters but rather recognition of their surprising equanimity over the lamentable showing by their team. Passenger after passenger have displayed a laudable philosophical outlook, ‘At the end of the day we’re here on holidays - yes the team has been woeful - but you Aussies have been wonderful and fully deserve your victory. Are we disappointed ? Undoubtedly. Are we sorry we came ? Not at all, it’s been a memorable experience’.
