I had a call from a very good client of mine at around 07:15 today saying that he was stranded at Heathrow and could I take him to Aberdeen. So I said I would be there in half an hour not knowing the full situation at Heathrow.
I then started to hear the news that they had arrested 21 people who where masterminding or intending to blow up planes from Heathrow and they where only allowing people to board with just there wallets and everything else had to go in with the luggage plus they where cancelling planes left right and centre and the radio was saying that it was utter chaos in and around the Heathrow area. The picture that was going through my mind was being stuck in traffic for hours.
I set off and amazingly was able to weave and bob my way into the airport in no time at all!
I arranged to meet at the chauffeured parking offices so I pull up and greet my client who has been on the phone trying to arrange other flights from different places without much joy and it turns out that the drive to Aberdeen is the last resort as they could catch a train from Peterborough at 9.35am so he and his companion where phoning around and waiting for feedback but the most likely option was to have a private jet from Farnborough Airport.
So we decided rather than wait around to get out of the airport and make our way towards Farnborough and if they can’t get a plane then we would turn around and head North!
We were travelling on the M25 towards the M3 when they got the call but by the time they could let me know that they could not get a flight I already was on the turn off but managed to head back into London on the M3 and make our way up past the airport and hit the M25 further on as the traffic going north was really bad.
So I said why Peterborough? and not Kings Cross, which they agreed so they phoned up their PA and she managed to get a pair of first class tickets for the train leaving at 10:24am
So I managed to get there for 10:00am and thought am I glad I did not have to drive to Aberdeen or Peterborough as apparently there where a few traffic problems on the way and more than anything I am glad that the 10/08/2006 is not remembered for planes being blown out the sky and I am sure even my client would agree although this day has cost him a lot of time and inconvenience and money I think on his part the loss of time and inconvenience is more important than the money, But still will be glad that today the 10/08/2006 is not remembered for Planes dropping out of the sky.
